Back Pain Relief Q&A

What causes back pain?

Your spine bears the weight of your body and the physical stress of every move you make. As a result, you’re at risk of both acute injuries, like strains and sprains, as well as degenerative conditions, such as spinal arthritis or disc problems, that could cause pain or discomfort in your upper back, midback, or lower back. Other conditions that cause back pain include:

  • Sports injuries
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Herniated discs (disc bulge/protrusion)
  • Nerve impingement (pinched nerve)
  • Scoliosis
  • Spondylolisthesis

Your back pain could also be caused by bad posture. For example, if you spend all day slouching at a desk, you could end up with muscle spasms and tightness that lead to headaches, neck pain, upper back pain, and lower back pain.

What is sciatica?

Sciatica is a specific type of pain that’s caused by compression of your sciatic nerve in your lumbar spine, usually because of a herniated disc. Sciatica frequently causes pain, numbness, and tingling that radiates down through your buttocks and into your legs. Sciatica can involve only one or both your legs.

Sacroiliac (SI) joint pain can cause similar symptoms. However, SI joint pain is usually due to instability or hypomobility in the joint. You might also have SI pain following a fall or automobile collision. To learn more about Sciatica, click here to read all about it!

How is the cause of back pain diagnosed?

The provider team at Regenesys Physical Medicine provides comprehensive physical exams and diagnostic testing to identify the exact cause of your pain. Our providers will ask questions about your pain, lifestyle, and overall health and wellness. They will conduct orthopedic, neurological, and palpatory evaluations of your spine from your neck to your lower back and take note of any reduction in your mobility and function.

Our providers may also recommend diagnostic imaging studies such as X-rays, MRIs, and CT scans to examine your spine and supporting muscles, tendons, and ligaments in more detail.

What treatments can provide relief from back pain?

Customized treatment plans are designed to relieve your pain, stabilize your condition, and help you get back to a healthy and active life. Our provider team may prescribe one of more of the following to accelerate your body’s natural healing ability:
