Pregnancy Prenatal Care Q & A

Is chiropractic care safe during pregnancy?

There are no known contraindications to chiropractic care throughout pregnancy. While all chiropractors are licensed to work with women who are pregnant, very few actually specialize in prenatal/perinatal care. Both Dr. Wilson and Dr. Cochran have done extensive post-graduate training and continues to take CE courses to be able to provide the best possible care to women who are pregnant or are trying to conceive. Our doctors are trained to provide the most advanced treatment available to help you get out of pain, enjoy your pregnancy, and prepare for an easier birth and recovery.

Chiropractors that have been trained to work with pregnant women use specialized tables and equipment that adjust for a pregnant woman’s body. Additionally, techniques specialized for pregnant women are utilized that avoid unneeded pressure on the abdomen. Our doctors use a combination of gentle, safe methods and specialized equipment to help make the adjustment process easy and painless.

Dr. Wilson and his staff are thoroughly experienced in the needs of women who are pregnant. They will provide you with exercises and stretches that are safe to use during pregnancy and compliment any adjustments made to your spine. One of our wonderful patients recently left this sweet message about her experience:

“We owe your whole team so much!! My heart is full of gratitude. I just had the easiest and most amazing birth of my life and I owe it to your team. You were all so sweet, so respectful, and really cheering me on. I went from feeling anxious and scared for most of my pregnancy to confident and relaxed after starting treatments. And my confidence was well placed. Thank you, thank you! God bless you all.” -T.S.

Why should I have chiropractic care during pregnancy?

During pregnancy, there are several physiological and endocrinological changes that occur in preparation for creating the environment for the developing baby. The following changes could result in a misaligned spine or joint:

  • Protruding abdomen and increased back curve
  • Increased weight
  • Pelvic changes
  • Postural adaptations, including ligament relaxation due to the increased production of relaxin (a hormone produced during pregnancy which causes the pregnant woman’s body to increase its elasticity preparatory for birth)

Establishing pelvic balance and alignment is another reason to obtain chiropractic care during pregnancy. When the pelvis is misaligned it may reduce the amount of room available for the developing baby. This restriction is called intrauterine constraint. A misaligned pelvis may also make it difficult for the baby to get into the best possible position for delivery.

The nervous system is the master communication system to all the body systems including the reproductive system. Keeping the spine aligned helps the entire body work more effectively.

What are the benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy?

Chiropractic care during pregnancy may provide benefits for women who are pregnant. Potential benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy include:

  • Maintaining a healthier pregnancy
  • Eliminating sciatica, back pain, and pelvic pain
  • Relieving round ligament pain
  • Strengthening core musculature
  • Controlling symptoms of nausea
  • Reducing the time of labor and delivery
  • Potential to prevent an unnecessary cesarean section

What about chiropractic care and breech deliveries?

The late Larry Webster, D.C., Founder of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association, developed a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment that enables chiropractors to establish balance in the pregnant woman’s pelvis and reduce undue stress to her uterus and supporting ligaments. This balanced state in the pelvis makes it easier for a breech baby to turn naturally. The technique is known as the Webster Technique.

The ICPA definition for the Webster Technique is as follows:

The Webster technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and diversified adjustment. The goal of the adjustment is to reduce the effects of subluxation and/or SI joint dysfunction. In so doing neuro-biomechanical function in the sacral/pelvic region is improved.

It is considered normal by some for a baby to present breech until the third trimester. Most birth practitioners are not concerned with breech presentations until a patient is 37 weeks along. Approximately 4% of all pregnancies result in a breech presentation.

The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics reported in the July/August 2002 issue an 82% success rate of babies turning vertex when doctors of chiropractic used the Webster Technique. Further, the results of the study suggest that it may be beneficial to perform the Webster Technique as soon as the 8th month of pregnancy when a woman has a breech presentation.

Currently, the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association recommends that women receive chiropractic care throughout pregnancy to establish pelvic balance and optimize the room a baby has for development throughout pregnancy. With a balanced pelvis, babies have a greater chance of moving into the correct position for birth, and the crisis and worry associated with breech and posterior presentations may be avoided altogether. Optimal baby positioning at the time of birth also eliminates the potential for dystocia (difficult labor) and therefore results in easier and safer deliveries for both the mother and baby.

Dr. Wilson is certified, trained, and thoroughly experienced in Webster Technique and has helped many pregnant patients to avoid unnecessary cesarean sections by facilitating the baby to turn to the correct position naturally.

Dr. Wilson and the entire team at Regenesys are absolutely amazing! Around week 12 of my pregnancy I started to develop major sciatic pain and leg numbness. I could hardly stand for more than 10 minutes without being incredibly uncomfortable and needing to sit down. This issue truly limited my ability to do daily activities and I knew it was only going to worsen as time passed. I made an appointment with Dr. Wilson and, from day one, I knew I had made the right decision. He created a custom plan that involved chiropractic care, stretching, strength training and prenatal massage. I am now 27 weeks pregnant and am able to exercise, walk, stand and do all my daily activities with minimal pain. I will continue to see Dr. Wilson and his team to help maintain my active lifestyle and mitigate any discomfort through the rest of my pregnancy! I would highly recommend Regenesys to anyone in search of chiropractor care! The team is friendly, responsive and fantastic to work with. I look forward to my visits and know that without Dr. Wilson and his team this pregnancy would have been much for difficult. I am very grateful I found them!
